Micronutrients to support the immune system against COVID-19

In this article from the Manila Bulletin, written on May 4 by Dr. Kaycee Reyes, the various micronutrients which help our immune system to combat COVID and other viruses were highlighted. Micronutrients are substances that our various systems need in small amounts in order to work properly. She cited a study written earlier this year which connected the affects of nutrients such as Vitamins A&C as well as Selenium and Zinc on the immune system. 1 Here are some of the effects mentioned in the article:

“1. Vitamin A. This vitamin also helps in lung repair among other functions. Lack of vitamin A may impair the body’s defenses and may increase the risk of infection. (Vitamin A is key in our mucous surfaces maintaining and regenerating themselves, as well as in the production of antibodies)

2. Vitamin C. An antioxidant that helps in immune response as it protects the cells against free radicals. It also aids in white blood cell production that is also crucial in immune response. . In COVID-19 patients, it has been reported that this vitamin also helps in avoiding cytokine storms that may result in hyperinflammation.

3. Vitamin D. According to research, lack of vitamin D is linked to a higher risk for COVID-19, and also has an impact on its severity. Vitamin D also plays a role in both innate and adaptive immunity, and it reportedly also helps prevent cytokine storms. Adequate sun exposure is key for the body to be able to create vitamin D.

4. Selenium. Also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It helps against viral infections and free radicals. It has been found that those with COVID-19 have lower levels of selenium before getting infected.

5. Zinc. This nutrient is essential in immune function. It is also known for its antiviral properties. Moreover, zinc helps in both innate and adaptive immune response, and those who lack in zinc have a higher chance for infection.”

Editors Note:

This article does a good job of highlighting the various nutrients which are good for your immune system. It is worth remembering that supporting your immune system is one of the best preventive measures we can take against COVID infection. Apart from this, it has also been shown that organic food contains higher levels of these valuable antioxidants and nutrients. Click to see our previous articles supporting this assertion.

We need to remember that our immune system is a powerful and effective defense against COVID and other pathogens. By consuming organic food that fortifies this, we give ourselves the best chance at living healthy lives.
